The aim of this project was to take a series of hands portraits showing variety and contrast.
Elvis Fan
This image was taken at an Elvis Tribute Artist (ETA) event in Bridlington, Yorkshire. I went expecting some kind of
Diane Arbus experience and came away an admirer of both Elvis and his fans. I'd been converted. In this image, I liked the texture of the hands and the great rings shouting their allegiance to 'the King'. The background was rather distracting so I tried to isolate the hands and black out everything else in the photograph.

Blackpool Hotel
Mid afternoon in the lounge of a Blackpool hotel after a huge portion of fish, chips and mushy peas at lunch time. I liked the detail and soft light thrown onto the subject's hands. Shot at f/4.5, the focus extends from the hands to the shoulder but throws the couple in the background out of focus. As a result, attention is very much thrown onto the subject. As we were leaving, the lady in the background started telling us her story. The couple are staying at the hotel and the man in the picture, her husband, is dying of cancer. She is not sure how much longer he has to live.
